Golf is an equivalency sport for scholarships. What does this mean? Unlike full scholarships used in football and basketball, equivelncy means a player can get anywhere from $0 to the full cost of attendence.
It’s important to know scholarships are on a one year basis, and can be increased, decreased or retracted completely. If the players scoring falls below an expected level of the team, the coach may reduce or eliminate the following seasons scholarship amount.
1) Start with the total cost of attendance; tuition, room & board, books per student.
Example: Tuition = $30,000
Room & board = $12,000
Books = $2,500
Total cost of attendance = $44,500
Women’s Division 1 Equivlancy = 6.0 scholarships x $44,500 = $267,000 in annual golf scholarship dollars.
The coach can distribute $267,000 to players each season. The scholarship money is given in dollars, could be a full amount to 3 players, half amount to 3 players, one third to 3 players, $15,000 to 2 players and $3,375 to one player. In any given season, the coach isn’t required to distribute the full amount, the coach may hold money back to give a player on a future team more money.
Example
Player A, B & C = $44,500
Player D, E & F = $22,250
Player G, H & I = $33,375
Player J & K = $15,000
Player L = $3,375
Total 12 players = $267,000
Athletic scholarship dollars can be ‘stacked’ with academic scholarship dollars. How does this work? Let’s say a player receives $11,125 from the golf team, the remaining $33,375 is paid by the family. If the player receives $25,000 from an academic scholarship, the family now would pay $8,375. When looking a public and private colleges, we recomend starting with both types as some private colleges have generous academic scholarships to help keep pace with the cost of a public college.
